One of the most common questions I’m asked before a photography session is "what should we wear?" The right outfit can completely transform your photos, enhancing the mood, tone and overall harmony of your portraits. Whether it’s a family, maternity or solo session... What you wear should make you feel comfortable and confident.
I always recommend keeping your clothing timeless and neutral... Tones such as beige, ivory, olive, taupe and muted earthy shades photograph beautifully and complement all skin types. These colours create a cohesive and elegant look that won’t date over time. Bright colours or bold patterns can look too busy and distracting. Nikolina Photography is based in the Goulburn Valley / Shepparton area, surrounded by the natural beauty of regional Victoria. Many of my sessions take place outdoors, often among native trees, dry grasslands and warm Australian light. The landscape here has a soft, neutral palette with golden tones and muted greens, which pairs beautifully with natural and understated clothing.
If you’re planning a family or couple session, aim to coordinate rather than match. Choose outfits that complement each other within the same colour palette and include some variation in texture to add depth and interest. Layers, movement and flow all help bring life to the photos.
The quality of the clothing itself also makes a difference. Natural materials such as linen, cotton and silk drape softly and photograph with a refined, organic texture. Avoid shiny fabrics or harsh synthetics, as they can reflect light in unflattering ways.
When choosing outfits, consider where your session will take place. Outdoor portraits often suit softer, flowing fabrics and relaxed styles that move naturally with the breeze. Studio portraits tend to photograph beautifully with slightly more structured or elegant clothing, which helps create that polished, fine-art look. If you’re unsure, you’re always welcome to send me a few outfit options beforehand and I’ll help guide you toward what will work best through the lens - I also send my clients a styling guide prior to the photoshoot date.
The finishing touches matter too. Simple jewellery, textured fabrics and thoughtful details can add depth and character without drawing attention away from your expressions. A knit throw, scarf or hat can work beautifully when chosen with intention. Most importantly, choose something that makes you feel confident. When you’re comfortable and feel your best, it shows in your expressions and body language. That sense of ease and authenticity is what creates the most natural and timeless portraits.
My photography style focuses on warm tones, soft light and genuine emotion. Choosing your outfit with these elements in mind helps me create the refined, fine-art finish that my portraits are known for.
