When people think about a photoshoot, they often focus on outfits, location or lighting. While all of these elements are important, one of the most crucial factors in a successful photoshoot is posing... especially when more than one person is involved.
Posing isn’t about stiff instructions or forcing people into unnatural positions. It’s about connection, flow and how bodies relate to one another within the frame. When posing is done thoughtfully, images feel natural, balanced and emotionally engaging. When it’s overlooked, even the most beautiful location or outfit can fall flat.
One of the most common things I see in unposed or poorly directed sessions is distance - people standing too far apart, unsure of where to place their hands or subconsciously pulling away from one another. I personally prefer my subjects to be close together, touching and interacting. This doesn’t mean anything uncomfortable or forced. It simply creates: stronger emotional connection, a sense of intimacy and warmth and images that feel intentional rather than accidental! When people are physically closer, the photograph immediately feels more cohesive and connected.
Posing becomes even more important when photographing: families, couples, siblings and extended groups.
Without guidance, group photos can easily feel disjointed... everyone standing at different angles, unsure of where to look or how to stand. Thoughtful posing brings everyone together and ensures no one feels awkward, isolated or out of place. Small adjustments make a huge difference: shifting weight, turning shoulders, adjusting hand placement, bringing bodies closer and creating layers rather than straight lines
These details are what transform a group of people into a visually strong portrait!
Many clients worry about posing because they feel awkward or “not photogenic”. That’s completely normal and exactly why professional guidance matters.
