Outdoor photoshoots are some of my favourites because of the beautiful scenery, the natural light and the freedom they give for movement and expression. But one thing that often gets overlooked in all the excitement of choosing outfits is footwear. What you wear on your feet can have a big impact on how enjoyable and effortless your session feels.

The landscapes around the Goulburn Valley / Shepparton area are stunning, but they can also be uneven, dry and covered with grass or rocks (especially in the bushland areas where I often photograph my clients) There have been times when clients arrived in delicate shoes or high heels and could barely walk comfortably across the terrain. It made it difficult for them to relax and fully enjoy the experience, which of course affects the natural flow of the session.

Comfortable footwear allows you to move freely and focus on the moment rather than your feet. It’s perfectly fine to bring the more photogenic shoes for close-up shots or final portraits, but I always recommend wearing something practical while walking to different spots. You’ll feel more confident, balanced and at ease, which always shows in your expressions and body language.

My goal during every outdoor session is to make the experience enjoyable and relaxed. When you’re comfortable, it’s easier to connect, to laugh and to be yourself… And that’s when the most beautiful, authentic moments are captured. Even something as simple as the right pair of shoes can help make your session feel natural and memorable for all the right reasons!
