When it comes to photographing children, I’ve always found that the most genuine moments happen outdoors. There’s something special about giving children the space to explore, move and simply be themselves. The natural light, fresh air and sense of freedom all help create moments that feel unposed and full of life.
Children often express themselves differently when they’re outside. They run, laugh, pick up leaves, climb and interact with the world around them. These natural movements and emotions can’t be recreated in a controlled studio environment. Outdoors, they forget about the camera and focus on play, which allows me to capture their real personalities… The little glances, curiosity and wonder that make childhood so unique.
In a studio setting, some children can feel confined or overwhelmed by the lights and backdrop. Even the most confident children can become shy or still when they feel restricted. Outdoors, everything changes! They have space to breathe, explore and connect with their surroundings and that sense of comfort always translates beautifully through the lens.
I also love how outdoor light brings warmth and depth to every photo. The soft glow at sunset and the golden tones of our Goulburn Valley landscape all add to the story. Nature has a way of enhancing emotion and giving photographs a sense of timelessness that can’t be replicated indoors.
My approach to children’s photography is relaxed, patient and playful. I guide gently when needed, but most of the time I simply observe and capture the genuine interactions as they happen. This approach allows me to create portraits that feel real, full of heart and true to who your child is.
